Sandstone Point, Toorbul

Date:Feb 15, 2013

One of our long term sites on the north east edge of Deception Bay and bordering the southern mouth of the Pumicestone Passage. The Foreshore Reserve is a narrow strip of bushland running from Grey Mangroves Avicenna marina through to a Sandstone cliff dominated by Pink Bloodwood Corymbia intermedia and Corymbia tessalaris. Imbetween these two communities remains the vestiges of an uncommon littoral rainforest community for this area, dominated by Muttonwood Myrsine variabilis, Coastal Canthium Cyclophyllum coprosmoides and Hard quandong Elaeocarpus obovatus. One species nearing its southern distribution limit on this site is Coastal Prickle Vine Caesalpinia bonduc, this vine is particularly spikey!

Sandstone Point is particularly rich in Aboriginal cultural heritage, with middens and fish traps present in the area.
